How it works: Brewing on your KBG Select

1. Fast Brewing Time

Brew a half or full carafe in just 4–6 minutes. The KBG Select is simple to use and features a quiet brewing process, perfect for home or office.

2. Consistent Brewing Temperature

A copper boiling element rapidly heats water to the ideal range of 196°F–205°F and automatically shuts off when the reservoir is empty—ensuring perfect coffee, every time.

3. Precise Engineering

Water is lifted through the glass tube by the boiling action and delivered to the outlet arm, where it pulses evenly over the brew basket. This process mimics a manual pour-over, allowing the coffee grounds to bloom for optimal flavor.

4. Optimized Coffee Extraction

The cone-shaped brew basket steeps the grounds thoroughly, unlocking the coffee’s full flavor, aroma, and complexity with every brew.

5. Independent Hotplate Control

A selector switch adjusts the hotplate temperature between 175°F–185°F depending on your brew size. Both the brewer and hotplate automatically shut off after 100 minutes for safety and convenience.

Get the Most out of Your Moccamaster

1. How Coarsely Should I Grind my Coffee?

We recommend using a medium-coarse grind, with a texture similar to coarse sand or sea salt. If you’re purchasing pre-ground coffee, share these descriptors to ensure you get the right coarseness. Keep in mind that most bagged, pre-ground coffee is typically too fine, which can affect both flavor quality and the brewer’s performance.

2. Is There a Difference Between Filters

Moccamaster Oxygen-Whitened Filters are the best choice for brewing clean, crisp coffee. Unlike brown unbleached filters, which can leave a subtle “cardboard” taste, or permanent wire-mesh filters, which often clog with coffee oils, our paper filters ensure a smooth, balanced brew. A clogged filter can cause the basket to overflow or steep the coffee for too long, leading to over-extracted, bitter flavors—something you’ll never have to worry about with Moccamaster filters.

3. What Kind of Water Should I Use?

If the water tastes good to drink, it will make great coffee. We recommend using fresh tap, filtered, or bottled water for the best results.

Avoid using reverse osmosis (RO) or distilled water, as these can damage the brewer’s copper boiling element. Because all minerals are removed in RO and distilled water, the water becomes slightly acidic. In an effort to return to neutral pH, it leaches minerals from the copper element—eventually causing permanent damage.

Since we build Moccamaster brewers to last for decades, using RO or distilled water could significantly shorten your brewer’s lifespan.

4. What is Descaling, and How Often Should I Do it?

Over time, minerals from water accumulate inside the Moccamaster’s boiling element, forming scale. This buildup can slow and eventually stop the flow of water. It also can affect the brewing temperature and saturation time.

If not descaled regularly, the brewer can become permanently damaged. Descaling products break down the mineral buildup inside your brewer, ensuring consistent brewer functionality and great coffee.

Descaling your brewer every 100 cycles, or a minimum of every three months. An excellent way to remember is by descaling after you finish a box of 100-count filters.

Golden Cup Standard: The Four T’s

What Makes Good Coffee?

It all comes down to the coffee solubles extracted into your water. The coffee industry defines four scientific benchmarks for perfectly brewed coffee—known as the Four T’s.

1. The Temprature

Brewing at a consistent 196°F–205°F is essential for extracting coffee solubles and unlocking full flavor.

2. The Time

A brew cycle of 4–6 minutes allows coffee to release its flavor without over- or under-extraction.

3. Agitation

Gentle agitation of the coffee grounds as water flows through ensures even saturation, maximising the precision of a manual pour-over.

4. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

This is the ratio of coffee solubles to water. The European Coffee Brewing Centre (ECBC) defines the ideal extraction yield as 18%–22%, and the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) calls this the “Golden Cup.”

Every Moccamaster brewer is engineered to hit this target—every single brew cycle.
